Q. Is it law that you have to shut off a fork lift each time you get out of the machine?
A. Once again, I can only provide information. You will need to make your own decisions. Here is some information that might assist you.

The OHSA Reg 851 Section 57 reads "a vehicle left unattended shall be
immobilized and secured against accidental movement".

The CSA Standards 4.9.12.1 say

Due to the versatility of lift trucks and their multiple uses, it is
generally recognized that the lift truck operator can be required to leave
the operating position to perform or enhance certain functions and tasks
such as
(a) viewing the placement of a load
(b) determining the location of the forks relative to pallet entry;and
(c) picking or placing components of the load

CSA Standard 4.9.12.2 says

When an operator is required to leave the operator's position for such
purposes, the operator shall
(a) return all controls to neutral
(b) apply the parking brake;
(c) return the key-switch to the OFF position; and
(d) remain in the immediate vicinity (usually within one truck length) and
in full view of the lift truck and it's load.

The operator shall at all times remain in the operaotr position when the
lift truck is equipped with a platform designed for the purpose of lifting
personnel and the said platform is occupied by a worker.
