Q. When are you required to use emergency warning devices?
A. Any commercial vehicle operating on a provincial highway between one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise must have, on-board, and adequate supply of emergency warning devices.
Where flares, lamps or lanterns are used, these devices must be capable of producing at least two individual warning lights which must be capable of lasting a minimum of 8 hours and be visible from at least 150m (500 feet). Alternatively, portable reflectors can be used. Although the law requires that emergency warning devices be used between one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise, the defensive driver will deploy these devices whenever needed and particularly when visibility is reduced by fog, rain or snow.
At least two warning devices must be used, one must be placed approximately 30m (100 feet) in front of the vehicle and one the same distance to the rear of the vehicle. The rearward device must be visible from at least 150m (500 feet). Where there is a hill, curve or other obstruction within 150 m (500 feet) of the disabled vehicle, which may prevent other drivers from seeing the disabled vehicle an additional warning device must be placed beyond the obstruction.
