Many products, substances or organisms are dangerous to life, health, property or the environment. They may occur naturally or be manmade. These products pose immediate dangers such as toxicity, fire, explosion, asphyxiation, or burns, and long-term dangers such as polluting of the environment. They are classified in legislation as dangerous goods. They must be handled and transported properly.

To ensure the safety of drivers, the public and the environment, the TDG Act and Regulations are in place to govern:

	the handling of dangerous goods
	the offering of dangerous goods to a carrier for transportation
	the transportation of dangerous goods

Overview of Dangerous Goods Regulations

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations are written to reduce the danger posed by these goods during their handling and transport. All handling, offering for transport or transporting of dangerous goods must be carried out in compliance with these Regulations. The transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations applicable in Canada are similar to Hazardous Materials Regulations in the United States and incorporate certain elements such as the numbers used to identify substances that has been developed by the United Nations.

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations include the following basic elements;

	classification of all substances that qualify as dangerous goods by the
	nature of the specific danger they represent
	requirements for the packaging of dangerous goods
	specifications for the way dangerous goods are to be packaged and the
	specifications for various ‘means of containment’
	requirements for identifying dangerous goods through documentation,
	marks and labels, and placards
	requirements for actions that must be taken in response to any release or
	threat of an accidental release of dangerous goods
	requirements for all persons to have a sound knowledge of the applicable
	regulations through training
	schedules to identify dangerous goods and the specific requirements for
	each of them

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods course offered by Transportation Safety Training will include training pertaining to each of the above elements, more specifically listed below.

Regulations were re-written in a "clear language" form in 2002 to help persons who handle, transport or offer for transport dangerous goods, understand their responsibilities and to allow for easier referencing of regulations. The Regulations are very specific and detailed through which a greater level of safety can be achieved.

No person shall handle, offer for transport, transport, or import any dangerous goods unless the person complies with all applicable prescribed safety requirements and must have a TDG Training Certificate. Certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of issue and must be carried by the employee at all times. Truck drivers who fail to produce a TDG Certificate could be subject to a $300.00 fine for a first offence. The TDG training certificate must accompany the driver's license at all times while transporting dangerous goods.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods is a 4 hour program. The cost will include a participants manual, truck drivers handbook, and a wallet certification card.
